Sometimes, even though I know my kids like the back of my hand, they surprise me.
Blow me away.
Knock my socks off.
Take my breath away.
Make my heart swell with pride.
Both boys had report cards today. Joshua had his very first report card ever and had glowing remarks. He is doing so well in school. He is kind, caring, intelligent, and listens to the teacher and directions extremely well. He knows all of the information they have taught him so far in class. He is learning quickly, and starting to play his own letter games at home. He likes to figure out what letter words start with, and is getting pretty darn good at it. He surprises me each day with what he knows, what he remembers, and what he can do. As the second kid, sometimes his growing up sneaks up on me. He seems so little, yet so big at the same time.
Jacob blew me away today. I know he is smart. I know he is kind. But to hear his teacher talk about him made my heart burst. His teacher last year always talked about him fondly, but seeing him come into his own this year and really shine is just amazing. He is extremely smart, catches on quickly, and is such a great kid in his class. He is testing crazy awesome, which means nothing to him because he just likes to learn, which is the best thing ever. His teacher talked on and on about how great it is that Jacob loves to write. And, he was shocked to hear that Jacob's birthday is May 31 - shocked that he just turned 6 and is testing like he is. Jacob surprises me every day with what his little mind can figure out, retain,
Both of these little boys are growing and learning so quickly. I love them. Love that their hard work is paying off for them. Love that they enjoy school, enjoy learning, and enjoy doing good things at school. School is so important to us, and I'm so happy to see them starting their school years off with a fantastic attitude.

Finally some fresh air!
The weather has finally been nice the past few days, and we have made sure to get the boys out as much as possible and enjoy it before the cold comes back this week. Friday, Bob got home and the boys were already outside enjoying the afternoon riding bikes and playing with the neighbors. They had such a fun time running around.
Saturday morning we went for a run as a family - Bob pushed the boys and we did a couple miles before Jacob got out and jogged .4 of a mile with me at the end. He surprises me all the time with his goals and what he wants to do. He is such a great natural athlete and enjoys himself so much. We got back and the boys played outside all the way until lunch time. We came in for a quick lunch before heading back out. Jacob was so proud of himself again because I told him he could go next door and ring the doorbell himself to ask his friends if they wanted to come out and play. He loved going to the door himself without me being right there. Also, a great time to practice manners when asking a friend to play.
Joshua walked around picking up chunks of snow and smashing them on the ground, yelling, "Hulk SMASH!"
Saturday afternoon we headed to my mom and dad's house. The boys went on a walk with Bob and my mom while my dad and I went for a 4 mile run together. So nice to run outside, and first run with my dad for the year! We had dinner with mom and dad and then headed home. The boys were so tired from the fresh air and not taking a nap that day.
Sunday, Bob let me sleep in. Joshua and I were up from 5 to 6:30 - Josh had my cough a little bit, and I was nervous with his asthma, so I gave him his albuterol, which kept him from falling back asleep. He watched cartoons in my bed until around 7, and Bob let me sleep then from 7 to almost 9. Made my cold feel a little better! Mom and Dad came down and I met them out at Panera, but the boys stayed home and played Legos with Bob. Bob had already made them French toast that morning, so they were full. When we came home, all of us headed to Chuck E. Cheese for some games.
The boys LOVE this snowmobile game. They are pretty darn good at it, too!
Love this picture of Jacob and his hands. His hair is crazy because of wearing his hat right after taking a shower, haha. But, I love his sweet little hands here!
Jacob checking out the score playing air hockey. He is pretty good!
The boys kept their own game going for a pretty long time. Josh was doing a great job hanging in there, but he eventually lost interest and moved on without finishing.
Jacob's prizes!
We went out to lunch, and then the boys went home with Bob for naps while my parents took me to get my new running shoes for my early birthday present. I love my new shoes, and I can't wait to wear them! Nice to shop there and take my time and not have the boys with me. Joshua was with me the last time, and even though the boys are awesome, I always rush myself so I don't make them wait on me too long. When I came home, Bob and the boys were all in our bed sleeping - they had an awesome, and much needed, nap. I went for a run, and then we all went outside and played. Jacob used his new remote control truck from Santa, and Joshua is obsessed with driving the fire truck right now.
After dinner and bath time, we played a game of Chutes and Ladders. The first one is blurry, but I love them posing together so much. Jacob was saying "cheese" and Joshua was saying, "best friends forever." So sweet. Lately, Joshua has been telling Jacob he is the, "best XXX in the whole wide world." During dinner, Jacob started singing a song, and Joshua said, "Jacob, you are the best singer in the whole wide world." It is so cute.

Such a nice, quiet weekend just spending time as a family. Not looking forward to the colder weather after this little taste of getting back outside. But, I am looking forward to all the fun things we have planned for March and April, with spring break right around the corner!
Running: Week 8
Monday: 4.25 miles
Tuesday: Rest
Wednesday: 4.25 miles and lifted triceps, abs, chest and shoulders. First morning getting in my 5 a.m. workout!
Thursday: Rest - pretty terrible cold that was making it difficult to breathe.
Friday: 3.75 miles - still sick, but didn't want to take the day off
Saturday: 6.25 miles - 2.25 miles in the morning as a family run. Bob pushed the kids in our bike trailer converted jogging stroller that is super hard to push. Jacob got out and ran the last .4 of a mile with me. He did a fantastic job. We told him to not run as fast as he could and to just jog, and he did fantastic. He came home and rode his bike like a crazy person, too! The other 4 were with Dad outside. Was so nice to be running outside finally. This was only my 2nd run outside of the year because of all the terrible ice and snow we have had so far this year.
Sunday: 3.25 miles. Another outdoor run. By far the hardest miles of the year so far for me. I set my sights too high of trying to run faster, even though I have the worst cough right now and feel gross. Finished in a good time, but just super hard!
Miles for the week: 21.75
Miles for 2014: 156.75

Lots of rest days, but I was pretty burned out on exercise this week and wanted to give myself a little break. I was pleased I've been running enough that I could get my 20 miles in for the week in only three days of running! Very pleased! The 9 miles felt pretty good, but I was definitely more sore than anticipated the next day. I didn't have quite enough calories in that day, and could really tell that night and the next morning.

Warming Up
This winter has been pretty brutal. Lots of snow, and freezing cold weather! Our temperatures are on the rise, and I have made sure the boys have gotten outside after school the past few days to take advantage of the warm temps with snow still on the ground. The first day, I let them splash in puddles, get soaking wet, and slide down a mound of snow with their neighborhood friends! I finally remembered to snap some pictures of them playing with their toy boats through the backyard yesterday. They had a great afternoon, and I enjoyed not having to worry about them getting too cold. They didn't need so much gear on, but I didn't want them to get soaked and have to go in early.

Notes from this week:
Jacob got his stitches out Friday after school. He is such a trooper. The nurses remembered him and were telling him how proud they were that he was so tough when he got the stitches. Jacob wanted to see each stitch after it was cut out. Now, just to make sure we get this cut healed properly and clean it like crazy! Jacob has been absolutely fantastic about not touching it, keeping the band-aid on, and being careful with his chin.
Joshua is officially signed up for preschool! Next year he will be going to school from 8:15 to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I am so excited for this stage, where I can see him develop his own little personality and friendships away from home. He will do such a great job at his new school!
Had a wonderful play date with a friend I don't get together with nearly as often as I would like to. I love how you feel after connecting with someone who makes you a better person and a better mother. I am so lucky to have found such wonderful friends, and need to remind myself to make more of an effort to get together with them on a regular basis.
Now time to get everything set for Valentine's Day, parties at school, and more work outs this week!

Running: Week 5
Monday: 5.25 miles, lifting (biceps, back, legs) and abs
Tuesday: 3.25 miles, lifting (triceps, shoulders, chest) and abs
Wednesday: Jillian's 30 Day Shred Level 3
Thursday: My workout streak was finally broken. After working out every day since December 30, I took January 30 off because Jacob ended up hitting his chin on the wall during swimming lessons and needed 3 stitches. Also the first time I splurged on my diet for the year and had a delicious, comfort meal at Taco Bell after we left the immediate care clinic. Nothing like pigging out to hide your true feelings about your kid getting stitches. Yikes! Jacob was an unbelievable kid, and didn't even cry during the whole ordeal. He amazes me every single day at his strength.
Friday: I went ahead and took this day off, too. I was suppose to have my 5k race Saturday morning, and figured I would just rest my legs. I was coming down with a little something and starting to lose my voice, so I thought I would just get the extra rest.
Saturday: I woke up multiple times in the night with a terribly sore throat, and body aches like crazy. Went ahead and had Bob text my Dad super early in the morning to tell him I wouldn't be making the race. I slept most of the day, and got pretty bad come Saturday night.
Sunday: Woke up feeling crummy, but gradually recovered throughout the day. Ended my day with a trip to the gym, and surprisingly got in 5.25 miles. I wanted to just get in a couple miles and head home, but once I started, I just kept going. I knew it was going to be a rough week for me on the miles, and figured I would get whatever I could!
Total miles for the week: 13.75
Total miles for 2014: 91

Running: Week 4
Monday: 3.25 miles. Ran a 5k at a very fast pace for me on a treadmill. Glad I pushed it. Hopped off the treadmill and lifted shoulders, triceps and chest, and did some ab work.
Tuesday: Jillian's 30 Day Shred Level 2. Again, didn't want to work out, but luckily, Bob knew I would regret skipping it and suggested just doing Jillian's. So glad I did.
Wednesday: 7.25 miles (last .25 was my cool-down). My brother texted me during the day and told me he ran 7 miles that morning. I ran 6 as my long run last week, so decided to try and do 7 on the same day as my brother. Got it done. Put the treadmill at a comfortable pace and just kept trucking along. Definitely not a fast run - ran all 7 miles at a 10:31 pace. But, I ran the whole thing comfortable, never getting winded or feeling like I wanted to stop. Ironically, I ran the entire thing while watching the show on TLC about people who are about 600 pounds getting weight-loss surgery.
Thursday: Jillian's 30 Day Shred Level 2. Had to take a day off running after my 7 miles - my legs were a little sore.
Friday: 4.25 miles. Ran my 5K (the first 3.1) in 29:45, which is definitely my best treadmill time ever. I've never timed my 5K outside, but I've always ran faster without trying outside, so I'll be interested to see if I can get it down to 29 minutes outside. Very proud of my time tonight.
Saturday: Jillian's 30 Day Shred Level 3.
Sunday: 6.25 miles and abs.
Total miles for the week: 21 miles
Total miles for 2014: 77.25 miles

Running: Week 3
Week three is complete! Here is a run-down of my workouts this week. Went into more detail this week because I logged as I went along, and wanted to remember more details of my runs to see how I was feeling before/during/after the runs. I can really tell I'm getting stronger, which is great for me to want to keep up on my weight lifting and cross training. Incorporating some DVDs in my week, and lifting at the gym has really made a big difference in just three weeks! Happy to say my streak of exercise has continued - still no days off from exercising since December 30, 2013 - three weeks!
Monday: Jillian's 30 Day Shred Level 3. After five days of running in a row, I had to start off my week with a cross training day. I had never done level 3 before, and it was hard, but easier than I was expecting. Proud of my cross training lately that made this a little easier than it would have been even a month ago.
Tuesday: 6 mile run and .5 mile walk. Hopped on the treadmill wanting to get to 6, but not knowing if I was going to make it. Once I hit mile four and my legs were still feeling fine, I went ahead and did six. Longest run I have had since my half marathon back in November. I was very proud of myself, and glad my legs weren't sore the next day!
Wednesday: 3 mile run, .25 mile walk. Legs weren't overly tired, but I did not want to over do it after my long run. Did some ab work and triceps before heading home from the gym. I was very hungry all day today!
Thursday: Jillian's 30 Day Shred Level 2. Bob and I did this together, which was great because we ate a late dinner and I didn't feel like working out at all. Without him encouraging me, tonight would have been a wash! I was very proud of myself during the workout tonight. I could tell a huge difference in my strength and was able to do the entire workout without struggling at all. Normally I fall behind on the walk out push ups or some of the other strength moves, but I was fine tonight. Hard work is paying off.
Friday: 4 mile run, .25 mile walk. Left leg slightly sore during the run, so I wanted to remember to keep an eye on it! Very nice run, picked up the pace steadily throughout and booked it at the end. Lifted triceps and chest and did abs.
Saturday: Ran a 5K and pushed my time, walked for half a mile on an incline, ran a half mile at a faster pace with a sprint at the end, and ending with a little walk for a total of 4.25 miles. Lifted biceps, shoulders and legs and did some ab work. Great work out day. Run was great and was really able to push my speed.
Sunday: 3.5 miles. Left the house in my old shoes so my nice ones wouldn't get wet in the snow, and forgot to grab my running shoes on the way out the door. So, had to run in my old shoes. Wanted to go longer, but stopped running at 3 miles because I was afraid my legs would hurt from my old shoes if I went too far. Walked the last half mile to finish at 3.5 for the day. Did some abs, also.
Week running total: 21.75 miles
2014 running total: 56.25 miles

Running
This year, I would like to start being more on top of this blog. I realize how much I like looking back to when the boys were super little and seeing our day-to-day lives. It's a lot of work though, so I fell off the blog wagon for a while. I have some drafts of posts about our holidays, but have not loaded pictures yet, so those will have to wait. In the meantime, I want to get going with tracking my running here so I can look back easily on where I started and where I go from here.
I completed my first half marathon Nov. 2, 2013 with my brother, Mike, and best friend, Sarah. After the half marathon, I ran well for a couple weeks, and then took a couple weeks off to enjoy the holidays and relax a bit on my running regime. I ran a lot in 2013, but didn't track any of my mileage or progress. I am proud of my accomplishments. I started in January with struggling to finish my mile, and ended the year where I never ran shorter than 3 miles. I'm not fast, but I'm not slow anymore, either.
For 2014, I have plenty of challenges for myself, a couple races I'm registered for, and I really want to keep track of my progress. I got the running itch to end the year, and have surprisingly worked out every day since December 30. Not sure when I'll break that streak, but for now, I'm enjoying having worked out every day. My legs are a little tired this week, but mostly because I had to run so many days in a row after being snowed for three days.
Here is a run down of my last two weeks, for my own tracking purposes:
Week 1
Dec. 30, 2013: 5.75 miles
Dec. 31, 2013: 3.25 miles
Jan. 1, 2014: 4 miles outside, push ups, chair dips, planks
Jan. 2: 3.25 miles/10 minutes rowing, push ups, chair dips, planks
Jan. 3: 2 miles and lifting
Jan. 4: 3.25 miles, 15 minutes rowing, 15 minutes elliptical
Jan. 5: (Start of snow storm) Jillian's 30 Day Shred Level 2
Week running total: 21.5 miles
2014 running total: 12.5 miles
Week 2

2014 running total: 34.5 miles
Pretty proud of my numbers, especially considering I have only been able to run outside once, and the rest are done on the treadmill. I don't mind the treadmill, but I typically will run longer and faster outside, which helps my numbers each week normally. But, with below zero temps, a foot of snow on the ground, and lots of ice, I am just thankful I took advantage of the once decent day before the weather was terrible.
Hoping this is a great start to a great year. And, hoping that if I commit to tracking it here, I will be accountable to keep up my numbers all year long.
Tomorrow I'll have to make sure I take a day off from running. I hate taking Mondays off from running because I like to start the week with a nice run. But, with five days in a row on the treadmill, I need to switch it up and give my legs a rest. Especially after having my 3.5 mile run being a struggle because of tired legs.
Here is to a high mileage 2014!

Jan. 2: 3.25 miles/10 minutes rowing, push ups, chair dips, planks

Week running total: 21.5 miles
2014 running total: 12.5 miles
